Advanced solar powered hydrogen production systems based on green algal cells (2011–2013)

Abstract:
AIM: To enhance patented high-efficiency green algae cell lines designed to drive solar powered H2 production from water. Two mutation sets that are proven to (a) double light capture efficiency & (b) increase the proton supply to the H2 producing catalyst will be combined. Biophysical light capture enhancement will also improve process engineering. SIGNIFICANCE: Economic analysis (Nat Biotechnol 2010) demonstrates the potential of microalgal biofuel systems. This project aims to significantly increase the co-production efficiency of H2 & oil. OUTCOME: National benefits include the development of advanced microlagal biofuel systems that uses salt water & non arable land for climate change mitigation & regional development.
