Toxic metal removal from wastewater sludge (2017–2022)

Abstract:
Sludge management is a major issue for water utilities, incurring substantial costs. Land application of wastewater sludge is a sustainable way of sludge management, but the presence of toxic metals hinders its long-term repeated application. This project aims to develop an innovative, chemical-free and energy-positive technology and the underpinning science to enable efficient toxic metal removal from wastewater sludge. The technology is based on the treatment of wastewater sludge using acidified nitrite. The outcomes will provide strong support to the water utilities in achieving sustainable sludge management and potentially brings large economic, environmental and social benefits, to the water utilities.
