Einstein's equations in the presence of symmetries (2024)

Abstract:
Einstein¿s theory of General Relativity is one of the most influential scientific theories of all time. In Pure Mathematics, and more specifically in the field of Differential Geometry, the study of Einstein¿s vacuum field equations has been a central theme in the last 60 years. In this project, we aim to classify solutions to these equations that possess additional symmetries; the latter are natural from both the physics and geometric perspectives. Outcomes are expected to fill major knowledge gaps in Mathematics and theoretical Physics. Anticipated benefits include strengthening the university¿s leadership in mathematical innovation internationally.
